Summit Trex™ Hundeschuhe

Our wonderful 10.8 year old collie has degenerative myelopathy, which is similar to ALS in humans. Incurable, fatal, and heartbreaking. When DM dogs walk, because they can’t control their feet and limbs, their paws “knuckle,” meaning they walk on the tops of the paws instead of the pads, scraping and abrading the nails and toes. We’ve tried several types of booties to protect his feet, and thus far the Summit Trex booties work best to provide traction and protect his paws and nails. There is good grip on the bottom to provide traction and help keep him from splaying, and the adjustable Velcro loops allow us to customize the fit. The bumper on the front of the toes protects the toes, although after a few weeks the constant scraping on pavement ruins them. We’re on our 2nd pair. Our dog is a smooth collie (short-coated collie) and their hind feet are shaped kind of like a rabbit’s hind feet: long and narrow. Most booties on the market are too wide and the foot slides around, adding to the instability. Many booties also are too short for long legs. These booties are short, too, but the Velcro allows us to cinch them tight enough that they stay on. These booties have been truly helpful and we are so grateful to Ruffwear for making them.

I don’t usually write reviews, but in this instance felt compelled because these boots have made a positive impact on our dog’s welfare. In the last few years one of his back feet has distorted. The vets don’t know why, and don’t have a solution other than pain relief. However, even with pain relief he was struggling to walk short distances on hard surfaces. This boot has helped that issue enormously and, while we don’t road walk much, it does stop him carrying his leg. We remove the boot once in the fields as he’s fine on soft surfaces and romps about like a youngster.

We use these shoes as protection for our handicapped German Shepherd, who was hit by a car and has had no feeling in the front right since then. Instead of hitting your paw on the asphalt, the shoe perfectly protects the ball and top.

My dog was very comfortable wearing these shoes and adapted to them quickly. Would suggest if deciding between sizes go with the smaller to ensure boots stay snug.
